TSA102-BINO on an Equatorial Mount

TSA-102 Rotating Binoscope

Contrary to the custom Alt-Azimuth mounting this Takahashi TSA 102 Binoscope is mounted on an equatorial mount. A set of rotating rings from Parallax (USA) was used to allow for the rotation of the Binoscope to level the eyepieces. Normally these rings are used for rotating the Newton type telescope.

The reason for using an equatorial mount is personal. For observing the tiniest details on the moon and the planets, so with the highest magnification, I prefer the steady one direction equatorial movement of the telescope. It is also important to have enough space to take a seat at the telescope, because the observer should be able to position the eyes as strain free as possible to allow for maximum relaxation during observation. Only then the observer will be able to see what the instrument can deliver.

During one of the first moon observing sessions with this Binoscope the small 500 meter wide rill in the Vallis Alpes was easily spotted in full length at a magnification of 233x with use of the Pentax XW 3.5 mm eyepiece. It showed very clear the irregularities in the rill and the high contrast between the rill and valley floor. According to several observational books and lunar atlases this should only be possible with first class optics of above 130 mm diameter. Many Binoscope users know by experience that observing with two eyes has several advantages and going beyond the diffraction limit for high resolution observation is one of them.

Switching to the Kasai Extra Wide Vue 32 mm eyepiece it has 26x magnification and a splendid 3.3 degree field of view showing clearly the low contrast extensions of the Orion nebula filling up nearly the complete field of view.

Highly recommended instrument for lunar and planetary observing !

Comment by Matsumoto;

Mr. Alexnander van Lemel has successfully made his own rotative mount for his equatorial mount. I would like to give him my biggest applaud because I know the difficulty of making the rotarive device. He is not only a good craftsman but also has deep understanding of EMS and its applications.
He said the binoscope was set on the rotative mount currently with the preliminary device, but he would come back here again to explain closer detail of the mechanism after finishing it.

Just two days before the eastern Japan catastrophe, He and I were exchanging “Sake” in a Sushi Bar in Tottori City without knowing what would happen two days later. He knew the earthquake while he was going back to Tokyo, and he could scarcely evade it and could get home safely.

The cute girl in the 6th photo is his loving daugter. She was so kind that she had drawn me a cute picture leaving it to her father starting for Japan.
